What you need to know about trading foreign stocks

Facts about foreign exchanges

Foreign exchanges

Order execution

  • Orders execute during the operating hours of the pertinent foreign exchange.
  • If you place an order when that exchange is closed, the order will be queued until the exchange opens again. If your order is queued, you assume all risk for price and/or currency fluctuations pending execution of your order.

Currency

  • All trades in foreign exchanges are conducted in the foreign currency. A separate currency transaction must be entered prior to trading foreign equities to ensure you have enough of the proper currency in your account to cover the entire cost of the equity trade.
  • All equity positions in the global account are displayed in both the currency of the primary market in which the stock is traded, and in U.S. dollars.

Trading fees

  • Foreign brokers may add local trading fees to your quote. Trades are reported back to you with those fees included in the price.
  • Some exchanges have additional fees, such as stamp duties, that are also included in the price.
