Number 3, dogleg left. Most people hit driver to carry the left traps, but we hit 3 wood because we don’t draw the driver. It’s better to get the ball through the fairway, if you’re going to miss it. From the rough, it’s still possible to play to the front of the green.
This severe dogleg left is the longest par 4 on the course and starts Colonial’s famed “horrible horseshoe”—a demanding three-hole stretch. You must carry the deep fairway bunkers with a draw or pick a less aggressive line that leaves a long shot into the green. The up-and-down short of the green is not difficult.
