Michael Block: Do you have the chipping yips? Well, there’s a reason why you do. There’s a lot of movement in your swing, and then your hands are trying to save you at the moment of impact. So there’s two huge things that happen in what creates that movement. Number one is in the lower body and the legs. And number two tends to be in the wrists. So a lot of my students, when I see they’re chipping, there’s a lot of lateral knee motion. Right? And then number two, there’s a ton of wrist hinge. So if you combine a lot of this swing with a lot of this, you don’t think you’re going to start to get a little bit of chipping yips at impact?

So the way you get rid of them is, number one, get rid of the legs. We’re going to squeeze the knees in. That’s going to quiet ’em down. So a narrow stance, squeeze the knees in like you have an orange in between your knees, and hold it in there. That’s going to get rid of the lateral motion. Number two, use a video from this angle. I want you to see how long your swing really is when you’re trying to hit a 10-yard chip. You’re going this far back—this should go about 50, 60 yards. Okay? So in order for it to only go 10 yards, what are you going to have to do? You’re going to have to stall and slide, and it’s not fun. So if you keep on doing that when you’re out playing golf, your hands are going to start freaking out, and you’re going to have the yips before you know it. So squeeze the knees, feel no wrist action, and chipping becomes very simple. Use this technique, and I hope it helps the next time you’re out playing golf.
